People Names Noah Wyle Its Sexiest Man Alive for 2026
The "Pitt" star, 55, receives the honor for the first time after consecutive Emmy wins for the HBO medical drama, succeeding 2025 winner Jonathan Bailey.

People magazine named Noah Wyle, the 55-year-old star of the HBO medical drama "The Pitt," its Sexiest Man Alive for 2026, the magazine announced Tuesday. It is the first time Wyle has received the title, in a franchise People has run continuously since 1985.
Wyle succeeds Jonathan Bailey, the "Wicked" and "Bridgerton" actor who was named the 2025 winner on an episode of "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" last November and was the first openly gay man to receive the title. Mel Gibson was the inaugural choice in 1985; Patrick Dempsey, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Michael B. Jordan and John Krasinski have also held it in the past decade. This year's selection marks the 41st time People has made the pick.
A career built twice over
Wyle first became a television fixture in 1994 as Dr. John Carter on NBC's "ER," a role that carried him through five Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations over the show's 15-season run without a win. "ER" ended in 2009, and Wyle spent the next decade and a half in a mix of television and film work that never matched that early visibility.
"The Pitt," which casts him as attending physician Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch in a Pittsburgh emergency room, reversed that. According to the Television Academy's own awards records, Wyle won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2025 and repeated the win in 2026, beating nominees that included Sterling K. Brown, Gary Oldman and Pedro Pascal across the two years. He also won the Golden Globe for best actor in a television drama in January 2026. In April, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce gave him the 2,840th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, unveiled on April 9 outside the El Centro building on Hollywood Boulevard, with "Star Trek" alumnus Jonathan Frakes and actor Steve Weber speaking at the ceremony.
The show around him has also piled up recognition. The Television Academy's official records show "The Pitt" collecting 38 Emmy nominations and 11 wins across its first two seasons, including Outstanding Drama Series in 2026. Supporting wins have gone to co-star Katherine LaNasa, who plays charge nurse Dana Evans and won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2025, and to Shawn Hatosy and Ernest Harden Jr., who won guest-actor Emmys in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
Who the honor reaches
The Sexiest Man Alive title functions less as a measure of any single vote than as a marketing moment that People has sustained for four decades, timed each fall to anchor a newsstand issue and a round of morning-show and talk-show appearances. For Warner Bros. Discovery, the attention lands as "The Pitt" heads toward a third season, which the studio has said will premiere in January 2027. For Wyle, it is a reversal of the usual pattern for the award, which more often goes to actors in their 20s and 30s; at 55, he is among the older recipients in the title's recent history, and the pick arrives in the same year he already collected an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Walk of Fame star.
The award also reaches an ensemble show rather than a solo vehicle. The Television Academy's cast listing for "The Pitt" names 13 credited series regulars alongside Wyle, including Katherine LaNasa, Sepideh Moafi, Gerran Howell, Shawn Hatosy, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden and Patrick Ball, built around the structure of a single hospital shift.
A reaction heavy on disbelief
Wyle told People he did not expect the honor and initially doubted the call was real. "Just not in a million years did I think that this would be an honor bestowed on me," he said, adding that he first thought the news "sounded like a prank."
"Just not in a million years did I think that this would be an honor bestowed on me."
He said his wife, Sara, was "very pleased" with the news, telling him it "reflects well on her taste," to which he said he replied, "Okay, if you say so." His children were less reverent: his son told him the title would "make my life so much harder now" and warned that "you invite a lot of haters too," while his older daughter reacted with disbelief and is expected, in his telling, to tease him over it "for the next 50 years." Wyle also joked about how his former "ER" co-star George Clooney, himself a two-time Sexiest Man Alive winner, might take the news, suggesting Clooney would react like "a proud papa."
What comes next
People's Sexiest Man Alive issue reaches newsstands and its digital platforms this week, the traditional format for the announcement since 1985. The magazine's cover line for the issue, "No Second Opinion Needed," plays on Wyle's role as an emergency-room attending on "The Pitt." Alongside the main honor, People also released results of a companion readers' poll drawing more than 250,000 votes in secondary categories, naming Stephen Colbert its Sexiest Silver Fox and Travis Kelce its Sexiest Cat Dad for the year.
"The Pitt" is expected to resume production ahead of a third-season premiere in January 2027, which will give Wyle and HBO another round of press built around the show rather than the award. Counting both his acting and producing credits on the series, Wyle has now collected four Emmys for "The Pitt" altogether. Beyond that, neither People nor Warner Bros. Discovery has outlined further plans tied to the honor.
