Nepal's flood death toll passes 1,250 as search for hydropower workers continues
More than a week after a glacier collapse sent floodwater tearing through Nepal's Trishuli corridor, rescue crews are still drilling into buried hydropower tunnels and the United Nations is preparing a joint humanitarian appeal for what officials call the country's deadliest disaster since the 2015 earthquake.

More than a week after a wall of ice, rock and river water tore down the Bhote Koshi gorge on Nepal's northern border, rescue crews are still drilling into flooded hydropower tunnels in search of missing workers, and the confirmed death toll has climbed past 1,250 people in Nepal alone, with dozens more dead across the frontier in Tibet. Nepali officials now call it the country's deadliest natural disaster since the 2015 earthquake that killed roughly 9,000 people.
The catastrophe struck without meaningful warning on the morning of August 26, when a mass of glacier ice and mountainside rock collapsed into a tributary of the Bhote Koshi River near the Nepal-China border, temporarily damming the flow before the blockage gave way and sent a surge of water and debris crashing through the Rasuwagadhi border crossing, downstream hydropower plants, bridges and villages along a roughly 45-mile stretch of the Trishuli corridor. Nepal's government has since raced to assess a second, unstable debris dam that formed upstream in the flood's immediate aftermath, before Chinese water authorities reported it had largely drained on its own by the end of August.
The toll, still rising
As of September 3, Nepal's disaster authorities had recorded more than 1,250 confirmed deaths and roughly 4,200 people still listed as missing — up sharply from just over 1,000 confirmed dead in an earlier tally taken in the disaster's first days, a figure that includes trekkers and pilgrims bound for Mount Kailash in Tibet, migrant laborers and hundreds of workers employed at hydropower stations along the Trishuli River. On the Chinese side of the border, in the Tibet Autonomous Region, officials have confirmed at least 21 deaths with roughly 540 people still unaccounted for. Nepal's Independent Power Producers' Association said in the days after the flood that more than 900 people linked to eleven hydropower projects were unaccounted for; army engineering teams have since drilled into flooded tunnels at the Upper Trishuli-3A project and pulled out hundreds of survivors, though searchers say some workers remain trapped in debris-choked shafts.
The United Nations has separately estimated that roughly 93,000 people have been directly affected across the flood zone, with about 3,500 people still sheltering in some 27 displacement sites in Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts. UN agencies say six health facilities were destroyed or damaged and two more are currently unreachable, raising concern about outbreaks of dengue and scrub typhus among survivors crowded into makeshift camps during the tail end of the monsoon.
A landscape already primed to fail
Scientists investigating the disaster have converged on a similar explanation: a chunk of glacier and the rock beneath it broke free high in the mountains above the Lende Khola tributary, forming a temporary natural dam that failed catastrophically once enough water built up behind it. Researchers at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, a regional science body headquartered in Kathmandu, say such compound events — combining glacier collapse, avalanche debris and outburst flooding — are becoming more frequent as warming temperatures destabilize permafrost and ice across the Hindu Kush Himalaya. The organization's own assessments, along with a 2020 study it backed, identified 47 glacial lakes across Nepal, India and the Tibetan plateau as carrying an extremely high risk of sudden failure; regional monitors put the wider figure of potentially dangerous high-altitude lakes at close to 200.
The World Meteorological Organization has pointed to the same pattern, describing the Rasuwa disaster as an example of the "cascading hazards" that high-mountain regions face as glaciers retreat and slopes lose the ice that once held them together. Nepal has experienced smaller but similar glacial and flood disasters in recent years, but nothing on this scale since the 2015 earthquake, which struck a different part of the country and killed through a violently different mechanism.
Hydropower workers, pilgrims and rural villages bore the worst of it
The Trishuli corridor is one of Nepal's most heavily developed hydropower zones, and the flood knocked out eleven operating stations and a solar plant while damaging fifteen projects under construction with a combined capacity of roughly 470 megawatts — a significant blow to a country that exports electricity to India. Migrant construction and tunnel workers, many living in dormitories close to the riverbank, accounted for a large share of the missing in the disaster's first days. The border crossing at Rasuwagadhi and Gyirong is also a principal overland route for the pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, and foreign nationals — including Indian, American, Ukrainian, Australian and Malaysian citizens — were swept up in the flood alongside Nepali residents and security personnel stationed at the border post.
Women and girls have emerged as a particular focus of the humanitarian response. UN Women has said an estimated 43,000 women and girls in the affected districts need urgent assistance, citing destroyed water points that force women to travel further for basic supplies and heightened risks of exploitation and trafficking in the chaos of displacement. Aid officials have also flagged that roughly 17,000 children have been affected, with dozens of schools destroyed or damaged just as the academic term was under way.

The disaster has also opened a diplomatic front. Nepal's foreign minister, Shishir Khanal, told local broadcaster Kantipur TV that China, the United States and India — the world's three largest greenhouse gas emitters — bore a disproportionate responsibility for the warming driving glacier collapse across the Himalaya, arguing that Nepal was "paying the ultimate price for a global crisis we did not create." Nepal's finance ministry has separately written to international partners requesting urgent support from the UN's Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, the climate finance mechanism created to help vulnerable countries recover from disasters linked to global warming, arguing that waiting for the fund's scheduled board meeting in December would come too late. Khanal later moderated the framing in remarks reported by Indian media, telling reporters that Nepal had not formally demanded compensation from any single government, and that its aim was for the international community to recognize the disaster as a climate event requiring sustained support rather than one-off relief.
What happens next
Nepal's government and the UN resident coordinator in Kathmandu, Lila Pieters Yahia, have agreed to launch a joint four-month humanitarian flash appeal to fund the next phase of the response, layered on top of separate emergency appeals already issued by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and UNICEF. Search operations were still under way a full week after the disaster, with Nepali army units joined by foreign technical teams from South Korea, China and India, and forensic specialists from China and Singapore helping identify recovered remains. The government has also begun compiling a preliminary damage estimate exceeding two million tonnes of debris, alongside the wrecked bridges, roads and power infrastructure that will take years and hundreds of millions of dollars to rebuild.
Nepali and Chinese scientists continue to monitor the debris dam upstream and the wider set of glacial lakes identified as high-risk, while officials in Kathmandu press their case that the disaster should reshape how wealthy, high-emitting nations fund climate adaptation in the Himalaya. With the rainy season not yet over and thousands of families still without permanent shelter, aid workers say the more immediate task is preventing a second wave of disease and hardship among survivors before the response can shift from rescue to reconstruction.
