James Cameron's Lightstorm buys AI-driven 3D studio Outsyders

The acquisition unites native stereoscopic capture with AI-powered 2D-to-3D conversion, the latest move in a two-year buying spree as Cameron bets that new headsets and glasses-style displays, not movie theaters, will revive a format whose box-office fortunes collapsed after 2010.

James Cameron's stereoscopic technology venture, Lightstorm Vision, said this week that it has acquired Outsyders, a two-year-old company whose artificial-intelligence software converts flat footage into three-dimensional film, in a deal that consolidates several pieces of the director's post-"Avatar" push to make 3D standard across movies, sports and streaming.

The acquisition, announced Sept. 16 and first reported by Variety, brings under one roof the two halves of stereoscopic filmmaking that have historically been handled by separate vendors: native 3D capture, which is Lightstorm's specialty, and after-the-fact conversion of ordinary 2D footage, which is what Outsyders does using machine-learning models trained on both real and synthetic image data. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The numbers

Outsyders was founded in April 2024 by Paul Becker, Jared Sandrew and Chris Harvey, and in roughly two and a half years built a client list that includes Disney's "Lilo & Stitch," "Tron: Ares," "Moana," Doug Liman's high-frame-rate feature "Asteroid" and the IMAX 3D version of the documentary "Blue Angels," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The company says it converted most of "Lilo & Stitch" from 2D to 3D in eight weeks, a fraction of the months such work traditionally takes, and it currently has more than five features in progress. Lightstorm Vision, for its part, points to a track record across its parent company, Lightstorm Entertainment, of supporting more than 80 films and documentaries that have generated upward of $15 billion in worldwide box office, plus more than 600 live sports broadcasts converted or captured in 3D.

How Lightstorm got here

Cameron has spent three decades building stereoscopic tools largely for his own films, culminating in the "Avatar" franchise's three Academy Awards for cinematography. Lightstorm Vision, the technology division he spun up to commercialize that expertise more broadly, has moved quickly this cycle: in December 2024 it struck a multi-year partnership with Meta to produce native 3D content for Quest headsets, then in June 2026 it bought the German stereoscopic-camera maker Stereotec, whose rigs have been used on productions including "Gemini Man" and "Dune: Part Two," according to Road to VR. The Outsyders purchase closes the loop, giving Lightstorm a pipeline that spans capture, AI-assisted conversion and post-production delivery. The deal also follows the theatrical run of "Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D)," a Paramount concert film Cameron co-directed that trade outlets have described as a commercial proving ground for the combined technology ahead of this acquisition.

Who is affected

The consolidation is aimed squarely at studios and streamers weighing whether to convert existing 2D libraries or shoot new productions natively in 3D, a decision that has traditionally required juggling separate vendors with different technical standards. It also affects the boutique stereo-conversion shops that have handled that work for major studios; Lightstorm's strategy of buying rather than competing with specialists like Outsyders and Stereotec suggests further consolidation in this corner of the visual-effects industry could follow. Hardware makers stand to benefit too: Cameron has framed the deal partly around an expected wave of new 3D display devices, telling trade press that "the big tech companies will be releasing completely new hardware" in coming years, including glasses-style displays, which he called "the first major step toward 3D ubiquity."

The deal also lands amid a broader, more fraught conversation in Hollywood about AI's role in visual-effects work. Animation and VFX unions under the IATSE umbrella have been pressing studios for contract protections against AI-driven job losses, and a 2024 industry survey cited by the outlet Context found that roughly a third of studio executives expected AI tools to displace some 3D-modeling jobs by 2026. Outsyders has generally described its software as a productivity tool for existing artists rather than a replacement for them, but folding an AI-driven conversion pipeline into one of the industry's most prominent production companies puts it at the center of a debate that remains unresolved. It is also worth remembering that stereoscopic 3D has been through boom-and-bust cycles before: after the original "Avatar" helped push 3D to roughly a fifth of North American box-office revenue around 2010, that share fell back into the single digits within a few years as audiences gravitated toward standard screenings. Cameron's bet this time is that new consumer hardware, not movie theaters alone, will sustain the format.

"Their work and their AI tools are world class. Together we will provide end-to-end solutions for productions and for studios, as we merge the worlds of conversion and native photographic 3D," James Cameron said of the acquisition.

Outsyders chief executive Paul Becker described the deal in similar terms, saying the company's collaboration with Cameron on prior projects had confirmed that combining the two technologies was, in his words, "the most logical and effective step for the format." The announcement was corroborated separately by Deadline and TheWrap, both of which reported the same deal terms, project list and executive statements.

What happens next

Lightstorm has not disclosed a timeline for integrating Outsyders' staff or its more than five features currently in the conversion pipeline, though trade reporting indicates the Outsyders name and team will continue operating under the Lightstorm Vision umbrella rather than being folded away immediately, a pattern consistent with how Lightstorm handled its Stereotec purchase earlier this year. The bigger test will be whether studios accelerate 3D output to meet the hardware Cameron is anticipating; for now, the company's public pitch rests on speed and cost, with trade outlet postPerspective reporting that the combined platform is designed to let small teams produce stereoscopic content in a fraction of the time and expense of conventional conversion. Cameron's own next 3D tentpole, the continuing "Avatar" sequel series, gives Lightstorm an obvious in-house showcase for the newly combined pipeline in the years ahead.
