Taylor Swift Teases Self-Directed 'Patient Zero' Video With Dakota Johnson, Colin Farrell Ahead of VMA Honor

Taylor Swift used her most reliable promotional stage, a five-minute segment on network morning television, to open the next chapter of her rollout. A 13-second clip aired exclusively on "CBS Mornings" on Thursday, offering the first glimpse of the music video for her new single "Patient Zero," and confirming what fans had spent weeks speculating about: the video co-stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, and was shot by three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki.

The full video will not air until Sunday, when it makes its world premiere during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, according to a release from CBS and MTV. The same telecast will make Swift the single most-awarded performer in the show's four-decade history.

A Cinematic Teaser, and Two Surprise Co-Stars

The brief preview, built around Swift's self-professed affinity for the number 13, shows her alone in a bathroom before cutting to Johnson and Swift diving into water and later standing together at a gravestone marked "daughter" and "gone too soon." Farrell then steps out of a sedan to meet the two women, all three dressed in black. Beyond the teaser, Deadline confirmed that the video was directed by Swift and shot by Lubezki, whose credits include "Gravity," "Birdman" and "The Revenant."

The pairing of a pop star's music video with an art-house cinematographer of Lubezki's stature is unusual, and it registered immediately with entertainment outlets. TheWrap noted that Lubezki's involvement was, if anything, a bigger surprise to industry watchers than the casting of Johnson and Farrell, given his rarity in the music-video format. Variety's report on the teaser noted that neither Johnson nor Farrell has previously appeared in a Swift video, making the casting itself a piece of news independent of the song.

"Patient Zero" arrives Friday as part of "The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore," an expanded edition of Swift's twelfth studio album that adds four newly recorded tracks, including one titled "Cleveland!," widely read as a nod to her husband Travis Kelce's hometown roots. The extended release is available for pre-order through Swift's official store ahead of Friday's release.

The casting also situates the video within two well-established film careers. Johnson, known for "The Lost Daughter" and the "Fifty Shades" franchise, and Farrell, an Oscar nominee for "The Banshees of Inisherin" and a Golden Globe winner for "The Penguin," have not previously appeared in a Swift project, and neither is a musician by trade, a departure from the pop-world cameos, such as Sabrina Carpenter's appearance on the "Showgirl" title track, that have populated Swift's recent work. Their presence has been read by entertainment reporters as evidence that Swift is treating "Patient Zero" less as a conventional music video than as a short film with a narrative arc of its own, continuing a pattern set by "All Too Well: The Short Film" in 2021.

A Directing Career the Industry Is Now Formalizing

Sunday's ceremony carries stakes beyond a single video. CBS and MTV announced that Swift will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors, a category created this year to recognize musicians who direct their own work.

The honor recognizes "groundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling," and singles out Swift as "one of the most distinctive directors of her generation, using music video as an extension of her songwriting," according to the announcement from CBS and MTV.

The recognition reflects a body of work that includes "The Man," "Cardigan," "Willow," "All Too Well: The Short Film," "Anti-Hero," "Bejeweled" and "Fortnight," among others. Swift has been nominated for the VMA's Best Direction award seven times and won four, a category record. Accepting the new honor will push her career VMA total to 31, moving her past Beyoncé, with whom she has been tied at 30 since 2024, to become the outright most-awarded artist in the show's history. She also enters Sunday's ceremony with 11 nominations this year, including Video of the Year.

Scrutiny Follows Every Release

The video teaser lands in the middle of a week already dominated by Swift-related news. Her Tuesday announcement of "Patient Zero" set off the usual round of fan decoding, after she had spent roughly two weeks swapping the letter "O" for zeros across her social media and streaming pages. When the single's cover art was released, it drew a separate wave of criticism online over what many commenters described as heavy-handed photo editing, an episode covered by outlets including Euronews. That the video teaser and awards announcement have since overtaken the cover-art discussion illustrates how quickly attention moves within a rollout of this scale, and how little room there is for any single element of it, an image, a lyric, a casting choice, to go unexamined.

The commercial backdrop is difficult to overstate. "The Life of a Showgirl," released last October, was named the best-selling global album of 2025 by the IFPI and broke Adele's record for the biggest sales week for an album in the SoundScan era.
