What to know
San Francisco beat Washington 23-17 on Monday Night Football to improve to 6-0, its best start in years under coach Kyle Shanahan.
Christian McCaffrey scored twice and totaled 117 yards from scrimmage; Brock Purdy threw for 264 yards and a touchdown to George Kittle.
Receiver Mike Evans left in the second quarter after re-aggravating a troublesome Achilles tendon and did not return.
Washington fell to 1-4-1 after trailing 20-3 at halftime, despite a second-half rally led by Jayden Daniels that outscored San Francisco 14-3 after the break.

The San Francisco 49ers withstood a second-half rally from the Washington Commanders to win 23-17 on Monday Night Football at Levi's Stadium, extending their unbeaten start to the season to six games. A fourth-down pass breakup in the final two minutes, followed by a game-ending sack, preserved the margin after Washington had trimmed a 20-3 halftime deficit to six points.

Quarterback Brock Purdy threw an 11-yard touchdown to George Kittle in the first quarter, and running back Christian McCaffrey scored on short runs in each of the first two quarters as San Francisco built its lead. Washington, playing without several key contributors, answered with 14 unanswered points in the second half before the 49ers' defense closed it out.

The numbers

Purdy finished 21 of 29 for 264 yards and the one touchdown, with no interceptions. McCaffrey added 64 yards on 16 carries with two rushing touchdowns and caught nine passes for 53 more yards, totaling 117 yards from scrimmage. Kittle caught five passes for 69 yards and the score. Evans, in his first season in San Francisco, had three catches for 94 yards, including a 55-yard gain, before leaving the game.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels was efficient in defeat, going 29 of 40 for 300 yards and two touchdowns, both in the second half: a 1-yard pass to Stefon Diggs in the third quarter and a 9-yard pass to Rachaad White in the fourth. Tight end C. Okonkwo caught seven passes for 69 yards, and wide receiver Treylon Burks added four catches for 66 yards. The teams finished close statistically, with San Francisco holding a 375-314 edge in total yards.

San Francisco kicker Eddy Piñeiro missed an extra point after McCaffrey's first touchdown, a lapse that briefly kept the margin closer than the 49ers would have liked, before his 33-yard field goal in the third quarter made it 23-3. Defensive back Malik Mustapha broke up a fourth-and-goal pass intended for Burks with 1:54 remaining, and San Francisco's pass rush, which included a sack from edge rusher Mykel Williams, closed out the game by bringing down Daniels on Washington's final offensive snap.

Context: a perfect start, and a costly injury

The win keeps San Francisco perfect through six games under coach Kyle Shanahan, one of the strongest openings of his tenure, and comes in a season in which the 49ers have repeatedly had to win without key personnel. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw served a one-game suspension for an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty committed in Week 5 and was replaced in the starting lineup. Wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Christian Kirk were both unavailable, and 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall remains out for the season.

That made the health of Evans, whom San Francisco signed to a three-year contract in free agency last March, especially significant. Evans had entered the week already managing soreness in his left Achilles tendon, limiting his practice participation, and was listed as questionable. He appeared to re-aggravate the injury late in the second quarter and did not return. The 49ers have not yet said whether he will need to be placed on injured reserve.

For Washington, the loss dropped the team to 1-4-1, with its only win so far coming earlier in the season and a tie against the New York Giants in Week 5. The Commanders, who reached the NFC Championship Game last season, have now lost four of their last five outings and head into their bye stretch facing mounting pressure to turn the season around behind Daniels, who is in his third year as the franchise's starting quarterback.

San Francisco's start is notable mainly for its margin for error: the 49ers have now won six games in a row dating back to the start of the season, a stretch that has coincided with a steady run of injuries to skill-position players. Samuel, Kirk and Pearsall were already sidelined before Evans went down, which left San Francisco relying heavily on Kittle, McCaffrey and depth pass-catchers to move the ball once Evans exited. The 49ers have not lost since the season opener, and their point differential through six games remains among the best in the NFC.

  • Final: San Francisco 23, Washington 17
  • Records: 49ers 6-0; Commanders 1-4-1
  • Scoring sequence: Purdy-to-Kittle TD, Washington field goal, McCaffrey TD (missed PAT), McCaffrey TD, Piñeiro field goal, Daniels-to-Diggs TD, Daniels-to-White TD
  • Key injury: Mike Evans exited in the second quarter with a re-aggravated left Achilles

Reaction

Shanahan repeatedly described the win as "frustrating" afterward, according to a recap from NBC Sports Bay Area, pointing to the second-half letdown after his team had built a 20-3 lead. Kittle said the offense "just can't have that" after managing only three points after halftime, while noting that losing Evans "would have helped" but that execution needed to improve regardless.

"For us, it's not an exhale," McCaffrey said of the result, adding that the offense has to finish games more cleanly.

Linebacker Fred Warner praised Mustapha's game-sealing pass breakup, calling him "a fantastic player," while Mustapha himself downplayed the pressure of the moment, saying he was focused only on making the stop.

What's next

San Francisco will have the rest of the week to get a clearer picture of Evans' prognosis before turning to its Week 7 opponent, with the 49ers' coaching staff expected to provide an injury update later this week. Washington, meanwhile, will look to regroup after its fourth loss in five games as the Commanders try to salvage a season that began with high expectations. A fuller accounting of both rosters' health, and whether Evans' injury proves season-ending, is expected to emerge over the coming days, according to wire-service coverage of the game and official box-score tracking.
