Alexis Lafrenière scored three goals and added an assist Tuesday night as the New York Rangers winger powered his team to a 5-2 win over the crosstown-rival New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden. It marked one of the best individual nights of Lafrenière's career, according to the official NHL game summary, and his first career hat trick against the Islanders in the long-running Metropolitan Division rivalry.

New York struck first just under seven minutes in, when Oliver Bjorkstrand converted a feed from Lafrenière for a 1-0 lead. Lafrenière put his own name on the scoresheet early in the second period, finishing a pass from Mika Zibanejad and defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov to make it 2-0. Bjorkstrand added a second goal later in the period, assisted by Gabe Perreault and Will Cuylle, before the Islanders answered with goals less than two minutes apart from Bo Horvat and Calum Ritchie, both set up by Brayden Schenn, to cut the deficit to 3-2 midway through the frame. The Rangers held on from there, and Lafrenière closed out the scoring with two empty-net goals in the final two minutes, the first assisted by captain J.T. Miller and Zibanejad, the second by Adam Fox and Gavrikov.

The 5-2 final was independently confirmed by the ESPN NHL scoreboard, which logged the same result. Lafrenière finished with four points, a plus-4 rating and 18 minutes 54 seconds of ice time on three shots on goal. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin earned the win with 17 saves on 19 shots, while Islanders counterpart Semyon Varlamov stopped 19 of 22 in the loss, according to the box score published alongside the game summary.

Lafrenière, the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL draft, has spent his career since then gradually growing into the featured role New York envisioned when it selected him, and Tuesday's outburst was an early-season reminder of the ceiling the Rangers still believe he can reach. Hat tricks against the Islanders have been uncommon for either side of the rivalry in recent years, which have more often been decided by a single goal, making the four-point night a notable data point for a Rangers team that improved to 4-1 on the young season. The Islanders, who got 19 shots on goal and twice pulled within a goal before New York pulled away late, fell to 1-2.

The Islanders' official team site lists the club's full roster and upcoming schedule as it looks to regroup before its next meeting with its geographic rival later this season. Tuesday's result was one of nine games played across the NHL that night, part of a full early-season slate that also included a 6-2 Vegas win over Seattle and a 2-1 Florida victory over the Kings in Los Angeles. But Lafrenière's four-point, hat-trick performance was the signature individual effort of the night, giving the Rangers a statement win over their closest geographic rival just days into the new season and adding an early marker to a career that has steadily been building toward exactly this kind of breakout game.
