Louisiana Christian becomes first NAIA team to beat a scholarship-granting Division I opponent

Louisiana Christian University, an NAIA program with fewer than 1,000 undergraduates, rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit on Thursday night to beat Northwestern State 42-37 at Harry Turpin Stadium in Natchitoches, Louisiana, becoming the first NAIA team in history to defeat an NCAA Division I program that awards athletic scholarships.

The Wildcats trailed 27-14 in the second quarter before scoring 21 unanswered points in the third, including a pick-six, to seize control of a season opener that neither program's history suggested was possible. Northwestern State plays in the Southland Conference at the FCS level and offers football scholarships; Louisiana Christian competes a tier below, in the NAIA's Sooner Athletic Conference.

The numbers

According to the official box score posted by Northwestern State Athletics, the Demons out-gained Louisiana Christian on paper, piling up more than 500 yards of total offense for the first time since 2022. Quarterback Abram Johnston completed 30 of 42 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns, and running back Zay Davis rushed for 124 yards and a score, the program's first 100-yard rushing performance since October 2022. Kicker Payne Williams III made field goals of 32, 47 and 39 yards.

Louisiana Christian's numbers were leaner but more efficient in the moments that mattered: quarterback Perkins threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-25 passing, and Cunningham carried 14 times for 117 yards and two touchdowns. The Wildcats also turned the ball over only once, against Northwestern State's two lost fumbles inside the red zone before halftime — turnovers that proved decisive once Louisiana Christian's second-half surge began. Attendance was announced at 6,438.

How the game unfolded

Northwestern State looked in control early, scoring a field goal on its opening drive and then, after an interception, a touchdown to lead 10-0 less than six minutes in. Two late first-half scores — a one-yard keeper by Johnston and a 59-yard touchdown pass to Jimmie Duncan — pushed the Demons' lead to 27-14 at the break, according to a recap from Crescent City Sports. But two fumbles by Northwestern State inside the red zone in the closing minutes of the half kept Louisiana Christian within range.

The Wildcats opened the third quarter with touchdowns on their first two possessions, then added an interception return for a score, outscoring Northwestern State 21-0 to start the half and taking a 35-30 lead into the fourth quarter. Louisiana Christian held on from there, finishing a 28-10 second-half swing that erased the largest deficit of the night.

A rare meeting, and a first for the sport

The game marked the first meeting between the two Louisiana programs since 1968, ending a lapse of nearly six decades after they had played one another almost annually from 1922 through that year, Northwestern State noted in its official pre-game preview. Northwestern State, with more than 5,000 undergraduates, has competed at the Division I level since joining the Southland Conference in 1987; Louisiana Christian, with a fast-tempo spread offense, has won its NAIA conference championship twice in the past three seasons.

Louisiana Christian's athletic department said afterward that the win was just the 13th all-time by an NAIA program over any NCAA Division I opponent, and the first over a Division I program that offers athletic scholarships, according to the school's official game recap published by Louisiana Christian Athletics. Earlier NAIA wins over Division I opponents have generally come against programs that do not offer football scholarships, a group that includes the Ivy League and a handful of other non-scholarship FCS conferences — a distinction that made Thursday's result unusual even within that short list.

Reaction

Louisiana Christian head coach Ben McLaughlin framed the comeback as a product of composure rather than a single big play, describing a team that stayed even-keeled through a rough first half.

"Tonight was just a perfect example of a group of guys trusting their coaches and trusting their teammates, and playing one play at a time," McLaughlin said, adding that he had told his players before kickoff that "nobody's allowed to look at the scoreboard until the game is over."

Northwestern State coach Blaine McCorkle, in his third season leading the Demons, pointed to the two fumbled red-zone chances late in the first half as the difference in a game his offense otherwise dominated statistically. "We hold on to those two balls we may have 40 points," he said, according to the Crescent City Sports recap, referring to Northwestern State's halftime total. Coverage of the result, including from Bleacher Report and Louisiana broadcaster KALB, treated the result as one of the most improbable outcomes of the sport's opening week nationally, pointing to the roughly five-to-one gap in undergraduate enrollment between the two schools.

Louisiana Christian, now 1-0, returns home to Pineville for its Sooner Athletic Conference opener against Langston on September 5. Northwestern State, 0-1, faces a quick turnaround with a road trip to Louisiana Tech the same day, followed by conference games against East Texas A&M and Southeastern Louisiana later in September. For a Northwestern State program that used a season-opening win over Alcorn State a year ago to end a longer drought of slow starts, Thursday's loss reopens questions about depth and discipline that will follow the Demons into Southland Conference play. For Louisiana Christian, the win is already the signature moment in a football program dating to the 1930s that had never before beaten a Division I opponent of any kind.
