What to know
Utah Royals FC beat the San Diego Wave FC 1-0 in an NWSL playoff quarterfinal on Nov. 6, 2026, for the first playoff win in franchise history.
Kiana Palacios scored the only goal in the 30th minute off an assist from Cloé Lacasse; goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn made several key saves to preserve the result.
No. 7 seed Utah (14-11-5, 47 points) had lost all six previous meetings with No. 2 seed San Diego before this upset, which also ended the Wave's eight-match unbeaten run.
Utah advances to the NWSL semifinals (scheduled for Nov. 13-15) to face the winner of the Washington Spirit-Portland Thorns quarterfinal on Nov. 8; the NWSL Championship is Nov. 21 at Audi Field.

The Utah Royals FC won the first playoff match in franchise history on Friday night, beating the San Diego Wave FC 1-0 in an NWSL quarterfinal at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. Kiana Palacios scored the only goal in the 30th minute, and goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn made a series of saves in the second half to preserve the result for the No. 7 seed against the No. 2 seed Wave.

The win sends Utah to the semifinal round of the 2026 National Women's Soccer League playoffs, a round the club has never previously reached, where the Royals will face the winner of Sunday's quarterfinal between the Washington Spirit and the Portland Thorns. It was Utah's first-ever playoff appearance since the franchise relaunched in 2024, and its first competitive result of any kind against San Diego, which had beaten the Royals in all six of their previous meetings.

What happened

Palacios's goal came from a cutback pass by Cloé Lacasse, whose assist was her 11th of the season but her first since Aug. 29. The move began with goalkeeper McGlynn playing the ball out, with Jameese Joseph carrying it forward through midfield before the ball reached Lacasse and then Palacios, who finished from close range.

San Diego pushed for an equalizer for the rest of the match but could not beat McGlynn, who was the difference-maker. Five minutes into the game, she denied Melanie Bárcenas at point-blank range. In the 61st minute, she stopped a shot that had deflected off a defender. Later, she made another save on a looping shot from Gia Corley. Utah defender Paige Cronin also made a goal-line clearance, while San Diego goalkeeper Sandra Paños made a save of her own at the other end.

The numbers

  • Attendance at Snapdragon Stadium was 12,638, per match data.
  • Utah finished the regular season 14-11-5 for 47 points, placing seventh in the 16-team league.
  • San Diego finished second with a regular-season record that included an eight-match unbeaten run (seven wins, one draw) heading into the playoffs, a streak the quarterfinal loss snapped.
  • Utah had lost all six of its previous meetings with San Diego across the 2024, 2025 and 2026 regular seasons, including a 4-2 defeat at Snapdragon Stadium in August.

Context

Utah Royals FC is in just its third season since Real Salt Lake's ownership group relaunched the franchise for the 2024 campaign, five years after the original Utah Royals ceased operations and had its roster absorbed by the expansion Kansas City Current. The Royals clinched their first postseason berth in late October and closed the regular season with a 2-0 loss at Gotham FC on Nov. 1, a result that handed Gotham the league's first-place finish and its first Supporters' Shield, while leaving Utah to travel to San Diego as the lower seed. The Royals had gone 2-3-2 in their final seven matches of the regular season, a modest finishing stretch that made them clear underdogs against a Wave side that had won the Shield as recently as 2023 and had never lost to Utah in five years of head-to-head play.

San Diego had entered the postseason as one of the league's hottest teams, having gone unbeaten through eight matches to close the regular season, including a 1-0 win over Bay FC on the final day of the schedule that secured the No. 2 seed. The Wave's elimination marks their fourth straight playoff loss since their run to the league final in the franchise's first postseason appearance in 2022.

The NWSL's current postseason format pits the top eight teams in the 16-club league against each other in a single-elimination bracket, seeded by regular-season points, with higher seeds hosting through the semifinals. That format meant Utah, despite finishing seventh, had to win on the road against the No. 2 seed just to advance, a tougher path than higher-seeded teams face throughout the bracket.

Who's affected

For Utah, the result is a milestone for a club built almost from scratch after the 2020 shutdown. Head coach Jimmy Coenraets had rested forward Narumi Miura and defender Cece Delzer ahead of the match as both nursed minor injuries, instead starting Madison Hammond in defensive midfield and playing newcomer Jameese Joseph, who helped set up the winning goal, in an advanced role. McGlynn, who moved to Utah in 2025 after winning an NWSL championship with Gotham FC and who set the Royals' single-season saves record with 84 stops in 24 appearances that year, was central to the result.

For San Diego, the loss ends a season in which the club had positioned itself as a Shield contender into the final weekend. It is the second straight year the Wave have been eliminated in the playoffs' earlier rounds, following a 2025 quarterfinal exit to the Portland Thorns in overtime. The club will spend the offseason weighing personnel and coaching decisions against the backdrop of back-to-back early playoff exits despite consistently strong regular-season finishes.

What's next

Utah now waits to learn its semifinal opponent, with Washington hosting Portland in the other side of the bracket at Audi Field on Sunday, Nov. 8. The NWSL has scheduled its semifinal round for the weekend of Nov. 13-15, with the league championship set for Nov. 21 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. San Diego's season is over, and the Wave will spend the offseason evaluating a roster that finished second in the regular-season standings but has now lost four consecutive playoff matches.
