Ellen Pompeo is attached to star in and executive produce a new mystery drama in development at Hulu, adapting a bestselling thriller about a deaf nurse who stumbles into a murder investigation, according to trade reporting published Thursday. The project, titled "Not a Sound," pairs the longtime "Grey's Anatomy" star with veteran producer David E. Kelley and lands as Pompeo builds a development slate away from the ABC medical drama that made her one of television's highest-paid performers.

A nurse who cannot hear, and a body in the woods

"Not a Sound" is based on the 2017 novel by Heather Gudenkauf, in which a disgraced ER nurse named Amelia Winn loses her hearing after a hit-and-run crash that also costs her a marriage, a job and custody of her stepdaughter. Two years later, working to rebuild her life with a hearing service dog, Amelia discovers the body of a former colleague in the woods near her home and is drawn into what trade coverage of the announcement described as a deadly mystery that could finally explain the accident that upended her life. Gudenkauf's book, published by Park Row and detailed on the author's own site, became a New York Times bestseller and has circulated among streamers as adaptation material for years.

Matthew Tinker and Annakate Chappell, who wrote together on ABC's "Big Sky," are penning the series. Kelley, whose company has produced starry limited series including "Big Little Lies," "The Undoing" and "Presumed Innocent," will executive produce alongside Pompeo. The project is in the works at 20th Television, the studio behind "Grey's Anatomy," and does not yet have a series order, cast beyond Pompeo, or a release date, according to Variety's account of the announcement.

Kelley's involvement gives the project institutional weight. His official biography with the Television Academy credits him as the only producer to win the Emmy for outstanding comedy and outstanding drama series in the same year, for "Ally McBeal" and "The Practice" in 1999, and lists his 2014 induction into the Television Academy Hall of Fame. He has also won three Emmys during his run on "L.A. Law," two Golden Globes for "Ally McBeal" and four Peabody Awards across a career now spanning four decades. In the past decade he has increasingly built limited series around A-list actresses working through psychologically fraught, mystery-driven material, a template that "Not a Sound" appears designed to extend with Pompeo in the lead role.

A widening slate beyond Meredith Grey

The project is the latest to emerge from Pompeo's overall arrangement with 20th Television, a pact she has increasingly used to move from acting into producing at scale. In July, the studio set Jodie Whittaker to co-star opposite Pompeo in "Chicks," a Boston-set dramedy pilot about two estranged half-sisters who inherit their late father's small-time criminal enterprise, with Max Winkler directing and Pompeo producing through her Calamity Jane banner, according to Variety's coverage of that casting. That pilot, written by Katie Robbins, was conceived during production on Pompeo's 2025 Hulu limited series "Good American Family," a true-crime drama co-starring Mark Duplass that remains available on Hulu's official series page.

Pompeo's push into streaming development follows a run as one of the medium's highest-paid dramatic actors. She renegotiated her ABC contract in 2018 to a reported $20 million a year plus backend points, a deal widely reported at the time to have made her the highest-paid dramatic actress on television. She remains the anchor of "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Meredith Grey, a role she has played since the show's 2005 premiere. The series, now the longest-running primetime medical drama on American television, begins its 23rd season on ABC on Oct. 15, according to the network's own listings on ABC's official show page. That season also arrives without two longtime series regulars, Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver, whose characters were written out in the season 22 finale in a storyline producers described as a natural conclusion rather than a departure tied to any behind-the-scenes conflict.

What the deal signals for Hulu

Trade coverage framed "Not a Sound" as part of a broader pattern at Hulu, which under parent company Disney has increasingly built adult mystery and thriller series around established television stars rather than unfamiliar talent, a strategy the streamer has used to draw viewers with built-in name recognition. Pairing Kelley with Pompeo, whose Meredith Grey persona has anchored two decades of ABC's Thursday-night lineup, gives an otherwise unproven project a head start with audiences before a single scene is shot. It also gives 20th Television, which produces both "Grey's Anatomy" and the new project, a second vehicle built around its most bankable star in case the long-running medical drama eventually winds down. Neither Hulu nor 20th Television has issued its own public statement on the project beyond confirming details to reporters.

The bet on star power comes as Disney has grown less transparent about how individual streaming services are performing. Hulu counted 64.1 million paid subscribers in the quarter that ended in September 2025, according to Disney's own fourth-quarter earnings release, which was also the last report in which the company disclosed Hulu subscriber and average-revenue figures separately before folding them into broader direct-to-consumer results the following quarter.
