Meta Platforms said Monday it has hired Chirantan "CJ" Desai, MongoDB's chief executive of less than a year, to lead a newly created Meta Enterprise Platform business, an effort to sell the company's artificial intelligence tools directly to corporate customers.

Desai will serve as Meta's chief enterprise platform officer, reporting directly to founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, according to an announcement posted to Meta's newsroom. The new unit will initially center on a suite of tools including Meta's Muse personal AI assistant, along with a Meta Business Agent and developer products branded Muse API and Muse Code.

MongoDB's abrupt transition

Desai's departure came with little warning. MongoDB confirmed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that he had stepped down as president and chief executive effective immediately, and that the board had reinstated Dev Ittycheria — who led the company for eleven years before Desai succeeded him in late 2025 — as interim president and chief executive while it searches for a permanent replacement. The filing said Desai's exit was not related to any disagreement with the company over its operations or policies.

Investors reacted sharply. MongoDB shares fell as much as 18 percent on the news, closing down from $421.40 to $343.06, according to TechCrunch — the stock's worst single-day decline in months. The turmoil comes even as MongoDB reaffirmed its revenue guidance for the quarter.

What happens next

MongoDB's board has retained an executive search firm to identify a permanent chief executive, while Ittycheria resumes day-to-day leadership in the interim. The announcement rattled the broader software sector Monday, as enterprise software rivals including Salesforce, ServiceNow and Snowflake each dropped roughly 4 percent as well.
