SpaceX targets September 22 for Starship's first full orbit of Earth
The company will attempt to fly its Starship rocket into orbit for the first time and deploy 26 production Starlink V3 satellites, a flight SpaceX's chief financial officer has called its first "revenue-generating" mission for the vehicle.

SpaceX has set September 22 for the first attempt to send its Starship rocket into a full orbit of Earth, a milestone the company has chased since the vehicle's debut test flight blew up over the Gulf of Mexico three and a half years ago. According to a mission update posted by SpaceX, the fourteenth integrated flight test will lift off from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, during a 75-minute window opening at 8:15 a.m. Eastern time, with September 23 held as a backup date.
Unlike the thirteen suborbital test flights that preceded it, Flight 14 is designed to stay in space. The plan calls for Starship's upper stage to reach an altitude of roughly 275 kilometers, complete about six orbits over a flight lasting nearly ten hours, and then perform a deorbit burn before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean west of Chile. The Super Heavy booster will be expended in the Gulf of Mexico rather than caught by the launch tower's mechanical arms, a deliberate step back from the tower-catch attempts SpaceX has practiced on recent flights.
The numbers behind the milestone
The flight's headline payload is 26 production-model Starlink V3 satellites, the newest and largest generation of SpaceX's broadband spacecraft, which the company says will substantially increase capacity and speed for the roughly 10,000-satellite constellation once deployed. It marks the first time Starship has carried operational satellites destined for paying customers rather than instrumented mass simulators, and SpaceX has been explicit that the distinction matters financially as well as technically.
Getting to the pad required clearing a string of regulatory checkpoints. The Federal Communications Commission granted frequency and deployment authorization for the V3 satellites on September 2, and the Federal Aviation Administration's Starship stakeholder page shows the agency completed a tiered environmental review the following day, issuing a Finding of No Significant Impact and Record of Decision. The final assessment document, running to dozens of pages, covers the added risk of reentry and eventual catch attempts at Starbase. What SpaceX has not yet received, as of the September 15 mission update, is the FAA launch license itself — the last procedural item standing between the company and a countdown.
How SpaceX got here
Starship's flight-test record has been uneven by design. The first integrated flight, in April 2023, ended in a self-destruct order less than four minutes after liftoff. The second flight, that November, lost both the booster and the ship in separate failures. It took until October 2024, on the program's fifth flight, for Super Heavy to be caught by the launch tower for the first time, a feat SpaceX has since repeated with mixed success. The most recent flight, in July, achieved what SpaceX described as its softest ocean splashdown yet after deploying 20 earlier-generation Starlink satellites, though the recovery ship later had to be towed back to port on a semi-submersible barge after rough seas made retrieval too risky to complete at sea.
The stakes around Flight 14 are higher than a typical test because of what has happened to the company in the interim. SpaceX went public in June, in what NPR and other outlets reported was the largest initial public offering in history, raising roughly $75 billion and entering the market with a valuation approaching $1.8 trillion. The company, now trading on Nasdaq, disclosed in its most recent quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it had billions of shares of Class A and Class B stock outstanding as of the end of July. A public company with quarterly earnings calls has different incentives than a private one, and Starship's transition from experimental hardware to a revenue-producing satellite launcher is now something analysts and shareholders are tracking directly.
Who stands to be affected
The most immediate beneficiaries, if the flight succeeds, are Starlink subscribers. The V3 satellites carry more onboard processing and larger phased-array antennas than earlier models, and SpaceX has said they are central to plans for higher speeds and expanded capacity in rural and underserved markets, including regions where Starlink competes directly with fixed broadband providers and, increasingly, with Amazon's Kuiper constellation. A successful orbital debut would also matter to NASA, which has contracted a variant of Starship as the lunar lander for its Artemis program; every flight that validates the vehicle's reentry heat shield and engine relight performance feeds directly into that separate, higher-stakes mission profile.
Employees and suppliers at Starbase have additional reason to watch closely. SpaceX has been running roughly monthly test cadences for much of the year, and a clean orbital flight would let the company argue publicly that Starship has moved from prototype iteration into production-like operations — a shift with implications for hiring, supplier contracts, and the pace of Starship variants the company has discussed for later Artemis and deep-space missions.

SpaceX Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen previewed the flight's significance at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference on September 10, framing it as a turning point for how the company talks about the program.
"We've got another flight coming up later this month for Flight 14, which for the CFO is very exciting because it's going to be a revenue-generating flight. I love the demonstration flights, and now I'm excited that we're moving into production cadence," Johnsen told investors at the conference.
Coverage of the mission has emphasized how much SpaceX has scaled back its ambitions for this particular flight compared with recent ones. As TechCrunch reported, the company will not attempt to catch either the booster or the upper stage this time, choosing instead to prioritize a clean orbital deployment over the more visually dramatic tower-catch maneuvers it has practiced on prior test flights. Elon Musk has said publicly that a catch failure at this stage would represent too large a setback to risk on a flight meant to prove out an operational orbit and a real customer payload. Trade coverage, including a report from The Register, has likewise framed the mission as a deliberately conservative flight profile designed to protect the primary objective of reaching orbit and deploying satellites rather than to demonstrate recovery hardware.

If the flight reaches orbit and deploys its satellites as planned, SpaceX has indicated it intends to move toward a more regular launch cadence for Starship, a shift that would let the vehicle begin carrying meaningful shares of the company's satellite-deployment business away from the smaller Falcon 9, which cannot carry the bulkier V3 satellites in large numbers.
