NTSB reaches wreckage of Alaska charter crash that killed 8, begins weeks-long recovery
Investigators used a rare break in the fog to reach the mountainside wreckage of a Cessna 441 that crashed near a remote Bering Sea radar site, killing two Army Corps of Engineers employees, an Air Force lieutenant and five others on a charter flight chartered for routine maintenance.

Federal investigators reached the wreckage of a charter plane that slammed into a fogbound Alaska mountainside five days earlier, taking advantage of a rare break in the weather on Sunday to begin recovering the remains of the aircraft and start piecing together why all eight people aboard died in one of the deadliest civil aviation accidents in the state this year.
An eight-member team from the National Transportation Safety Board flew to the crash site near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site on Alaska's Bering Sea coast, roughly 450 miles southwest of Anchorage, according to Alaska's News Source, which has closely tracked the investigation. The twin-engine Cessna 441 Conquest II, operated by the Anchorage charter company Security Aviation and chartered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, crashed on August 20 while attempting to land at the isolated military airstrip.
A second approach, then silence
The flight departed Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport at about 9:15 a.m. carrying two pilots and six passengers: two Army Corps employees and four contractors making what officials have described as a routine maintenance trip. Weather at Cape Newenham deteriorated rapidly that morning. Visibility that stood at 10 miles with a 900-foot overcast ceiling earlier had collapsed to less than three-quarters of a mile with a 300-foot ceiling of fog and mist by the time the plane arrived, and continued falling toward 0.15 miles and a 200-foot ceiling shortly after, according to weather data cited by investigators.
The crew aborted a first landing attempt and went around. The plane crashed on its second attempt, roughly a quarter mile west of the runway, on a mountainside above the remote site. NTSB Alaska Regional Office Chief Clint Johnson, who briefed reporters days after the crash, said investigators believe the aircraft went down during that second approach.
"At this point right now the best way to describe it is highly fragmented and there was a post-crash fire," Johnson said, describing wreckage scattered several hundred feet up the mountainside.
The fragmentation and fire are consistent with a high-speed impact, investigators have said, though a cause has not been determined. A specialized team led by senior air safety investigator Eric Gutierrez, out of the NTSB's Seattle office, is running the on-scene phase of the inquiry with an FAA investigator who traveled from Washington to assist.
Recovering wreckage from a mountain with no roads
Cape Newenham has no road access and only a single, uphill airstrip that pilots and aviation attorneys who have flown it describe as unforgiving in poor weather. That isolation, combined with fog that can sit over the coast for days, has made the recovery almost as difficult as the crash itself. Investigators had to wait nearly a week for a weather window narrow enough to fly personnel safely to the wreckage.
With the site now surveyed, crews plan to move the debris by helicopter down to the runway and then load it onto a small cargo plane for transport back to Anchorage, where NTSB technicians can examine engines, instruments and structural components in a controlled setting. Officials have said the physical recovery alone could stretch over several weeks given the terrain and the unpredictable weather, and a preliminary report on the accident is expected within the NTSB's standard 30-day window, with a full determination of probable cause typically taking a year or more.
Who was on board
All eight occupants were killed. As of this weekend, officials had publicly identified three: Sabrina Hansen, an Army Corps of Engineers fire protection engineer, and Hayden Scalis, a Corps mechanical engineer, both based in Anchorage and traveling to inspect a fire suppression system at the radar site, and 2nd Lt. Leah R. Borsich, 23, an Air Force project programmer assigned to the 611th Civil Engineer Squadron at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, according to the Anchorage Daily News. The remaining five victims, including the two pilots, had not been publicly named as of Sunday, pending notification of their families.
Cape Newenham is one of a network of Long Range Radar sites that watch Alaska's coastline and airspace as part of the Alaska NORAD Region, a mission that regularly sends military and civilian personnel to remote, weather-battered outposts for inspections most Americans never hear about. The Army Corps of Engineers, which maintains infrastructure at many such sites, said the trip was tied to routine facility upkeep.
Lt. Gen. William H. "Butch" Graham, the Corps' chief of engineers and commanding general, addressed the losses within the agency in a statement.
"We mourn the tragic loss of our selfless teammates. They were public servants and true professionals, dedicated to securing our nation," Graham said, according to reporting from the Anchorage Daily News and NBC News.
Security Aviation, the charter operator, issued a brief statement after the crash saying its "hearts go out to the families, friends and loved ones of those who were lost," and military leaders including an Air Force lieutenant general also offered condolences, calling the deaths a devastating loss for the service.
What happens next
The investigation now moves into a slower, more technical phase. Once wreckage reaches Anchorage, NTSB specialists will examine the twin turboprop's engines, avionics and flight controls for mechanical faults, cross-reference radar and weather data against the pilots' reported approach path, and review the crew's communications and qualifications. Investigators have not said whether the aircraft's cockpit carried a flight data or voice recorder, a detail that will shape how much can ultimately be reconstructed from instruments alone.
The NTSB's public accident database will carry updates on the case as the agency's docket develops, and the FAA is assisting with the technical review. For now, the agency's focus remains on the mountainside above Cape Newenham, where crews are racing intermittent breaks in the fog to bring the wreckage — and the answers it may hold — down from the mountain.
